Dimension of these parts require less PC Board space of only 12.5 * 12.5mm and a height of 3 to 6 mm depending on the power output. The height is less than the next generation microprocessors.
This family of parts employs superior magnetic alloy material than the current iron powder cores, thus minimizing the core losses significantly.
Efficiency is further improved by using compact winding techniques known as wise edge or helicoil winding. This process uses a ribbon flat wire that yields lower DC resistance and minimizes the skin effect thus allowing the operational frequency up to 1 MHz.
These characteristics allow the HC family to achieve a higher current rating and energy storage than conventional inductors with spiral windings techniques.
The high energy saturation capabilities of the HC family permits up to 30% of inductance roll-off under DC bias.
The HC family is practically immune to EMI radiation due to its magnetic non-gap closed path design; features demanded by in multiphase regulators used in high-density board assemblies.
